J. Cole

J. Cole is an American rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer known for his introspective lyricism and self-contained production. Born Jermaine Lamarr Cole, he rose to prominence in the early 2010s after being signed to Jay-Z's Roc Nation label, and he later built his own imprint, Dreamville Records. His albums have been commercial successes while retaining a reputation for personal, narrative-driven songwriting.

Early life

Cole was born on January 28, 1985, in Frankfurt, in what was then West Germany, where his father was serving in the United States Army. He was raised primarily in Fayetteville, North Carolina, by his mother. He developed an early interest in hip hop, learning to rap as a teenager and later teaching himself to produce beats. He moved to New York to attend St. John's University, where he graduated magna cum laude, balancing his studies with efforts to break into the music industry.

Career

Cole built an early following through a series of mixtapes, including The Come Up, The Warm Up and Friday Night Lights. His persistence drew the attention of Jay-Z, and he became one of the first artists signed to Roc Nation. His debut studio album, Cole World: The Sideline Story, was released in 2011 and reached number one on the US Billboard 200. He followed it with Born Sinner in 2013.

His 2014 album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, became a defining release of his career and was widely noted for achieving platinum certification without guest features. He continued this approach on 4 Your Eyez Only in 2016, a concept-driven record, and KOD in 2018, which addressed themes of addiction and money. Across these years he developed a reputation as a live performer and as a mentor figure through Dreamville, the label and collective he founded, which released the collaborative compilation Revenge of the Dreamers III in 2019.

Recent work

In 2021 Cole released The Off-Season, which returned to a more competitive, lyric-focused style and again debuted at number one. He also contributed widely as a featured artist, appearing on tracks with a range of contemporaries, and pursued a long-stated interest in basketball by briefly playing in professional leagues abroad. He has continued to release singles and collaborative projects, and his guest verses remain among the most discussed in mainstream hip hop. Beyond music, Cole is known for the Dreamville Festival in North Carolina and for charitable initiatives through the Dreamville Foundation, reflecting his continued ties to the community where he was raised.
