Jungkook, born Jeon Jung-kook, is a South Korean singer and member of the globally successful boy band BTS. Known as one of the group's main vocalists and a prominent performer, he has also built a notable solo career with internationally charting singles and a debut studio album that reached audiences well beyond the established fan base of his group, making him one of the more commercially successful soloists to emerge from a Korean pop act.

Early life

Jungkook was born on 1 September 1997 in Busan, South Korea. He auditioned for entertainment companies as a teenager and joined the agency that would later launch BTS, undergoing the trainee process common in the Korean pop industry. As the youngest member of the group, he is often referred to as its "maknae," a Korean term for the youngest member of a team.

Career

Jungkook debuted as part of BTS in 2013. The group rose from a relatively small agency to become one of the most successful musical acts in the world, achieving widespread commercial success, record-breaking chart performances and a large international fan base often referred to as ARMY. Within BTS, Jungkook is recognised as a lead vocalist and performer, contributing to the group's singing, dancing and overall stage presence, and he is frequently noted for his wide vocal range. He has also been involved in songwriting and production work on group and self-produced tracks, and released self-made songs and covers directly to fans outside of official album cycles.

As BTS members began pursuing individual projects, Jungkook released solo music that achieved significant international success. His singles, including "Seven" and "3D," performed strongly on global charts and helped establish him as a soloist with broad appeal beyond the group's existing audience. He also gained attention for performing at the opening ceremony of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where he sang one of the tournament's official songs.

Recent work

Jungkook released his debut solo studio album, Golden, in 2023, which featured several of his charting singles and showcased a contemporary pop sound aimed at a global market. His solo work earned strong streaming numbers and chart positions internationally. Like the other members of BTS, he undertook the mandatory military service required of South Korean men, with the group planning to reconvene afterward. Alongside his individual releases, he remains a member of BTS, and he is widely regarded as one of the prominent figures in Korean pop music.
