Anthony Fauci

Anthony Fauci is an American physician-scientist and immunologist who served for decades as a leading figure in U.S. public health. As longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, he advised multiple presidential administrations and became one of the most prominent faces of the federal response to epidemics including HIV/AIDS and COVID-19.

Early life

Fauci was born on December 24, 1940, in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, where his family ran a pharmacy. He attended the College of the Holy Cross and then earned his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College, graduating at the top of his class. He completed his clinical training in internal medicine before joining the National Institutes of Health, where he would spend the bulk of his career.

Career

Fauci joined the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, and in 1984 became its director, a post he held for nearly four decades. His research focused on the immune system and infectious diseases, and he made significant contributions to the understanding and treatment of conditions involving immune regulation. During the HIV/AIDS crisis he became a central scientific voice, working with researchers and activists on the development of treatments and prevention strategies. Over his career he advised numerous U.S. presidents on health and biodefense matters.

Recent work

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Fauci served as a key member of the White House response effort and as chief medical advisor to the president, becoming a highly visible communicator of public health guidance and, at times, a polarizing political figure. He retired from his government positions at the end of 2022 after a long tenure in federal service. He has received numerous honors over his career, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and has continued to teach, write and speak on infectious disease and public health following his retirement from government. Over his long career Fauci became one of the most widely cited biomedical researchers in the world, authoring or co-authoring a large body of scientific literature, and he advised seven U.S. presidents on matters of health and infectious disease. His honors include the National Medal of Science in addition to the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Following his retirement from federal service he took on an academic position and published a memoir, On Call, reflecting on his decades in public health. He has remained a prominent and frequently debated public figure, defending the role of science in policymaking while drawing criticism from political opponents.
