Rai and Lagergren Lead as McIlroy Falls Short at BMW PGA Championship

The BMW PGA Championship kicked off with a bang as Aaron Rai and Joakim Lagergren emerged at the top of the leaderboard after the first round, both shooting impressive 66s. Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy, despite a promising start, faltered late in his round, ending three shots behind the leaders at Wentworth.

Strong Starts from Rai and Lagergren

Despite a solid first half, McIlroy struggled with his driving, missing 10 fairways out of 14. His finish was disappointing, including bogeys on the third and fourth holes and a troubling sequence that saw him end two-over par. Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy described his conclusion as a "stumble home" and acknowledged he had hoped for a better score. “I saw some good signs in my game... but overall, I wish I was standing here a couple of shots better,” he admitted.

Surges from Other Contenders

While McIlroy fell back to a tie for 19th, several players moved up the ranks. Adam Scott, 2013 Masters champion, made a strong impression, opening his round with a flurry of birdies, ultimately finishing with a 67. He stood alongside up-and-comers Ryan Gerard, Ludvig Åberg, and Nacho Elvira, all tied for third.

Race to Dubai leader Patrick Reed entered the fray with a solid performance, tying for seventh with a score of 68, alongside Viktor Hovland, Ryan Fox, and Robert MacIntyre.
