Andy Jassy Says Prime Video Now Generates Tens of Billions in Revenue

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy offered the clearest financial picture yet of Prime Video during the company's latest quarterly earnings call, describing the streaming service as a self-sustaining and increasingly formidable business. The disclosure adds meaningful detail to what investors have previously been told about the platform's trajectory.

A Revenue Milestone for Prime Video

Jassy confirmed that Prime Video now carries "a revenue run rate in the tens of billions of dollars" and is profitable as a standalone operation, according to TechCrunch. While Jassy had indicated to investors back in May that the service had turned profitable, the tens-of-billions figure represents a new and significant benchmark. The update underscores how Amazon's entertainment ambitions — once viewed skeptically by Wall Street — have matured into a core business rather than a costly experiment.

Amazon's broader entertainment footprint has been bolstered by its $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM four years ago, a deal that is now generating tangible returns. Amazon MGM Studios has recorded more than $1.2 billion in global box office receipts so far this year, driven in large part by the theatrical hit Project Hail Mary and the thriller Verity.

Box Office and Streaming Wins

Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling and adapted from Andy Weir's novel, opened in theaters in March and went on to gross an estimated $684 million worldwide, making it Amazon MGM Studios' highest-grossing release to date. The result is a landmark for a studio still working to establish itself among Hollywood's top tier.

On the television side, Jassy cited several series as standout performers: Reacher, Fallout, The Boys, The Summer I Turned Pretty, Carrie, and Off Campus. Season 4 of Reacher alone drew 66 million global viewers within its first 28 days. Production on Season 5 is already underway, and the show has been renewed for a sixth season — a sign of the franchise's durability.

Not every release landed as hoped. Melania, a biographical film, was acknowledged as a notable underperformer this year.

Sports Viewership Provides Steady Lift

Live sports continue to function as a reliable audience driver. Prime Video holds broadcast rights to NASCAR, the Masters golf tournament, and UEFA Champions League soccer. Thursday Night Football, however, appears to be the platform's most valuable sports property at the moment. The first six games of the current NFL season averaged 17.7 million viewers — a 16 percent increase over the same period last year, based on Nielsen figures that Amazon shared during the call.

The NBA on Prime also showed promise, with its second season attracting more than 2 million viewers, per Nielsen data.

The sports strategy reflects a broader industry logic: live events generate appointment viewing and reduce subscriber churn, making them especially attractive to streaming platforms competing for consumer attention.

Amazon's Bigger Commercial Picture

Prime Video's growth fits within a pattern of major capital deployment by Amazon. The company has been expanding aggressively across multiple fronts, and Amazon's record $48 billion investment commitment in India signals that its global ambitions extend well beyond entertainment. Meanwhile, other tech-sector leaders are pursuing similarly large strategic bets — OpenAI, for instance, is eyeing a 2027 IPO as it pushes toward a $1 trillion valuation.

For Amazon, the Prime Video numbers Jassy outlined Thursday are more than a milestone — they represent a validation of a content strategy that required years of sustained investment before delivering returns at scale.
