Andy Jassy

President & CEO of Amazon

Born: January 13, 1968, Scarsdale, New York, U.S.
Known for: CEO of Amazon, founder and longtime leader of Amazon Web Services

Andy Jassy is an American business executive who serves as president and chief executive officer of Amazon, one of the world's largest technology and retail companies. He is best known for building and leading Amazon Web Services (AWS), the company's cloud-computing division, before succeeding founder Jeff Bezos as chief executive in 2021.

Early life

Andrew R. Jassy was born on January 13, 1968, in Scarsdale, New York, a suburb north of New York City. He attended Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor's degree and later completed a Master of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. After graduating, he worked briefly in marketing before joining Amazon in 1997, early in the company's history as an online bookseller.

Career

Jassy spent his entire post-business-school career at Amazon, rising through the organisation over more than two decades. In the early 2000s he played a central role in conceiving and launching Amazon Web Services, the company's cloud-infrastructure business. Under his leadership AWS grew from an experimental offering into a dominant force in cloud computing, providing computing power, storage and services to startups, large enterprises and government agencies. The division became one of Amazon's most profitable units and a major driver of the broader shift toward cloud-based technology across many industries.

As founder and chief executive of AWS, Jassy developed a reputation as a detail-oriented operator known for writing and reviewing lengthy strategy documents and for emphasising long-term customer focus, a hallmark of Amazon's corporate culture.

Recent work

In 2021, Amazon announced that Jeff Bezos would step aside as chief executive and become executive chairman, with Jassy taking over as president and CEO of the entire company. He assumed the role in July of that year, inheriting responsibility for Amazon's vast operations spanning e-commerce, logistics, devices, entertainment, advertising and cloud services.

As chief executive, Jassy has overseen a period of significant change for the company. He has navigated shifting consumer demand following the pandemic-era surge in online shopping, implemented cost discipline and restructuring measures that included substantial workforce reductions, and positioned Amazon to invest heavily in artificial intelligence across its retail, cloud and devices businesses. He has publicly emphasised AWS's role in providing the infrastructure and tools underpinning the broader AI boom.

Jassy is regularly counted among the most influential figures in global technology and commerce. He is known for a relatively low public profile compared with some of his peers, focusing on operational execution and the long-term strategic priorities he inherited and reshaped as Amazon's second chief executive.
