Zayn Malik

Singer & songwriter

Born: January 12, 1993, Bradford, England
Known for: One Direction, Mind of Mine, Pillowtalk

Zayn Malik, often known mononymously as Zayn, is an English singer and songwriter who first found fame as a member of the boy band One Direction before launching a solo career marked by R&B and pop influences. His move from a globally successful group to an independent artist made him one of the more closely watched pop figures of the 2010s.

Early life

Zain Javadd Malik was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, in 1993. He grew up in a working-class, mixed-heritage family, with a father of British Pakistani background and an English mother. He sang from a young age and attended local schools before auditioning for the televised singing competition that would change his life.

Career

In 2010 Malik auditioned as a solo contestant on the British version of "The X Factor." After being eliminated as a soloist, he was placed into a group with Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson; the group, named One Direction, finished third on the show but went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands in history. With One Direction, Malik released a string of multi-platinum albums and chart-topping singles and toured arenas and stadiums around the world.

In March 2015 Malik left One Direction, citing a desire to pursue music on his own terms and live a more normal life. The departure was widely covered and marked one of the most prominent solo splits from a major modern pop group. He signed a solo recording deal and quickly established a distinct sound, leaning toward contemporary R&B and more mature, personal themes than the material he had recorded with the band.

Recent work

His debut solo single, "Pillowtalk," was released in 2016 and went to number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart. His debut solo album, "Mind of Mine" (2016), also topped charts on both sides of the Atlantic. He followed it with "Icarus Falls" (2018) and "Nobody Is Listening" (2021), continuing to explore intimate, genre-blending material. In 2024 he released "Room Under the Stairs," an album that incorporated folk and country influences and reflected a more personal, stripped-back direction, and he undertook limited live performances in support of it. Malik has largely kept a low public profile compared with his One Direction years, focusing on recording rather than extensive touring and speaking openly in interviews about anxiety and his preference for life away from the spotlight. He has also worked on collaborations with other artists and contributed to film soundtracks, maintaining a steady but deliberately understated presence in popular music.
