Xavi Hernandez

Xavi Hernandez is a Spanish football manager and former midfielder widely considered one of the greatest central midfielders in the history of the game. A product of FC Barcelona's academy, he became the embodiment of the club's possession-based style and was a central figure in the success of both Barcelona and the Spain national team.

Early life

Xavier Hernandez Creus was born on January 25, 1980, in Terrassa, near Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain. He joined Barcelona's youth academy, La Masia, as a boy and progressed through its ranks, developing the passing, vision and positional sense that would become his trademarks. He made his first-team debut for Barcelona at the turn of the millennium.

Career

Xavi spent the bulk of his playing career at FC Barcelona, making well over 700 appearances and becoming one of the most decorated players in the club's history. Operating as a central midfielder, he was instrumental in the team's dominance under successive managers, including the highly successful side led by Pep Guardiola, helping Barcelona win numerous La Liga titles and multiple UEFA Champions League trophies. His partnership with Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets in midfield became emblematic of the "tiki-taka" style of play built on short passing and sustained possession.

With the Spain national team he formed part of the golden generation that won the 2008 and 2012 European Championships and the 2010 FIFA World Cup, often dictating the tempo of matches with his passing. After leaving Barcelona, he played for Al Sadd in Qatar, where he later began his coaching career as manager of the same club, winning domestic honours.

Recent work

Xavi returned to FC Barcelona as head coach in late 2021, taking charge of the club where he had spent most of his playing career, after a managerial spell at Al Sadd in which he won domestic trophies. As manager of Barcelona he guided the team to a La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup before stepping down. His coaching approach reflected the possession-oriented philosophy he had embodied as a player, emphasising ball retention, pressing and the promotion of academy talent into the first team. Regarded as a legend of Barcelona and of Spanish football, Xavi remains a prominent figure in the sport, both for his achievements on the pitch and for his continuing involvement in management and football discussion. His individual honours and consistency placed him among the most admired midfielders of his era, and his influence on the modern emphasis on technical, possession-based football continues to be widely acknowledged.
