Tyler, the Creator
Rapper, producer & designer
Tyler, the Creator (born Tyler Gregory Okonma) is an American rapper, record producer, songwriter and designer known for self-produced albums, a distinctive visual identity and a career that has moved from abrasive underground rap toward melodic, genre-blending songwriting. He first gained attention as the central figure of the Los Angeles collective Odd Future before building a solo catalogue that has earned multiple Grammy Awards.
Early life
Okonma was born on March 6, 1991, and raised primarily in the Los Angeles area, including Hawthorne and Ladera Heights, California. Largely self-taught, he learned to produce music using software and developed early interests in design, photography and graphic art alongside music. As a teenager he began posting songs and videos online, cultivating the do-it-yourself approach that would define his later work.
Career
In the late 2000s Tyler co-founded Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All (Odd Future), a collective that included artists such as Frank Ocean, Earl Sweatshirt and Hodgy. His early solo material, including the self-released "Bastard" and the 2011 album "Goblin," drew attention for its shock-oriented lyrics and dark production, building a devoted online following. He directed many of his own music videos and oversaw the group's visual aesthetic.
Over subsequent releases his music broadened considerably. The albums "Wolf" (2013) and "Cherry Bomb" (2015) showed growing musical ambition, while "Flower Boy" (2017) marked a critical breakthrough with its lush arrangements and more introspective songwriting. "Igor" (2019) won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, and "Call Me If You Get Lost" (2021) repeated that win, cementing his standing as one of his generation's most acclaimed artists. He continued the run with "Chromakopia" in 2024.
Beyond music, Tyler founded the clothing brand Golf Wang and has worked on fashion and design projects, reflecting his long-standing interest in visual presentation. He also created and curates the Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival, an annual music festival in Los Angeles, and has contributed music and voice work to television and film projects.
Recent work
Tyler has remained a prominent live performer and festival headliner while continuing to release new music and expand his creative ventures. His later albums have been noted for their conceptual framing and character-driven storytelling, and he has continued to direct visuals and oversee the artwork and staging tied to his projects. His combined output across music, fashion and event curation has made him an influential figure in contemporary popular culture.
