Avril Lavigne
Singer-songwriter
Avril Lavigne is a Canadian singer-songwriter who became one of the defining pop-punk artists of the early 2000s. With a sound blending pop melodies, rock guitars and a distinctly youthful, irreverent image, she achieved rapid commercial success as a teenager and has maintained a long recording career across several albums.
Early life
Avril Ramona Lavigne was born on September 27, 1984, in Belleville, Ontario, Canada, and grew up in the small town of Napanee. She began singing in church and at local events as a child, and showed an early interest in country and rock music. As a teenager she was signed to a major record label, relocating to pursue music professionally and developing the songwriting and image that would shape her debut.
Career
Lavigne released her debut album, Let Go, in 2002. Driven by singles including "Complicated" and "Sk8er Boi," the album was a major international success and established her as a leading figure in the pop-punk and pop-rock scene of the period. Her early style, often paired with skate-influenced fashion, resonated widely with a young audience and helped popularize the genre in the mainstream.
She followed with Under My Skin in 2004, which took a somewhat darker, more rock-oriented tone, and The Best Damn Thing in 2007, which produced the upbeat hit "Girlfriend." Across these releases Lavigne accumulated numerous award nominations and substantial record sales, and she toured extensively. Her later albums, including Goodbye Lullaby and a 2013 self-titled record, showed a range of styles from acoustic ballads to heavier pop production.
Recent work
After a period away from recording, during which she spoke publicly about a serious battle with Lyme disease, Lavigne returned with the album Head Above Water in 2018, whose title track addressed her health struggles. In 2022 she released Love Sux, a record that returned to her pop-punk roots and arrived amid a broader revival of interest in the genre, including collaborations and tours alongside contemporary artists associated with the pop-punk resurgence.
Lavigne has also pursued ventures outside music, including a fashion line and a fragrance, and she established a foundation supporting people with serious illnesses and disabilities, reflecting her own experience with chronic illness. She has continued to tour and perform her catalog of hits to longtime fans while reaching newer listeners.
Widely regarded as an influential figure for a generation of pop-rock musicians, Lavigne is frequently credited with helping bring pop-punk to a mass teenage audience in the early 2000s. With a catalog of enduring singles and a career spanning more than two decades, she remains an active performer and recording artist whose early work continues to shape perceptions of the era.
