Bono
Singer & songwriter
Bono, born Paul David Hewson, is an Irish singer, songwriter, and activist best known as the lead vocalist and primary lyricist of the rock band U2. Over a career spanning more than four decades, he has become one of the most recognizable figures in rock music, noted both for his work with U2 and for his extensive humanitarian and political advocacy.
Early life
Bono was born and raised in Dublin, Ireland. He grew up in a household with a Catholic father and a Protestant mother, an experience he has cited as influencing his outlook. He acquired the nickname "Bono" from a group of friends in his youth. While attending Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin, he responded to a notice posted by drummer Larry Mullen Jr. seeking musicians, which led to the formation of the band that would become U2.
Career
U2 formed in the late 1970s with Bono on vocals, alongside The Edge on guitar, Adam Clayton on bass, and Larry Mullen Jr. on drums. The band released its early albums at the start of the 1980s and achieved widespread success with records that combined anthemic rock with socially conscious lyrics. Albums such as The Joshua Tree brought the band global acclaim, producing songs including "With or Without You" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." Through subsequent decades U2 continued to release commercially and critically successful albums and to mount large-scale international tours.
As frontman, Bono is known for his expressive vocal delivery and his lyrics addressing themes of faith, love, politics, and social justice. The band has won numerous Grammy Awards over its career and is widely regarded as one of the most successful rock acts in history.
Activism and recent work
Beyond music, Bono is widely known for his humanitarian activism, particularly campaigns focused on poverty, debt relief for developing nations, and the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa. He co-founded organizations dedicated to these causes and has worked with political leaders and institutions to advance them. His advocacy has earned both praise and criticism, and he has received various honors recognizing his charitable work.
In recent years Bono has continued performing with U2, including a residency at a major Las Vegas venue, and has pursued individual projects. He published a memoir reflecting on his life, career, and beliefs, and has remained an active public figure combining his musical career with ongoing advocacy.
