Tucker Carlson
Political commentator
Tucker Swanson McNear Carlson is an American conservative political commentator, writer, and television personality. He is best known for hosting the prime-time program Tucker Carlson Tonight on the Fox News Channel and for his subsequent independent media ventures.
Early life
Carlson was born on May 16, 1969, in San Francisco, California, and grew up in California. He began his career in print journalism in the 1990s, writing for newspapers and magazines and developing a reputation as a magazine feature writer and reporter before moving into television commentary.
Career
Carlson became a recognizable television figure through cable news, appearing as a commentator and co-host on programs at CNN and MSNBC during the 2000s. At CNN he co-hosted the debate program Crossfire, and he later hosted a program on MSNBC. During this period he was also a prolific magazine writer, contributing long-form features to a range of publications. He co-founded the conservative news and opinion website The Daily Caller, serving in an editorial leadership role and building it into a widely read outlet.
He joined Fox News and, in 2016, began hosting Tucker Carlson Tonight in the network's prime-time lineup. The program became one of the most-watched shows on American cable news, featuring Carlson's commentary on politics, culture, immigration, and media. His broadcasts were influential within conservative circles and frequently generated debate, with critics and supporters offering sharply divergent assessments of his rhetoric and choice of topics.
Recent work
In 2023, Carlson and Fox News parted ways, ending his prime-time program. Following his departure, he launched independent media projects, distributing interviews and commentary directly through social media platforms and later establishing the subscription-based Tucker Carlson Network. In this format he has continued to produce interview programs, monologues, and documentary-style content outside the traditional cable structure.
Carlson has also authored books on politics and culture that reached best-seller lists, and he has remained a prominent and polarizing voice in American conservative media. His commentary on foreign policy, immigration, economics, and cultural issues has been influential among segments of the political right while drawing sustained criticism from opponents and media watchdogs over particular segments and claims.
His move to independent distribution has been cited as part of a broader shift in political commentary away from established cable networks toward direct-to-audience platforms and subscription models. Through his own outlets he has continued to release interviews with political leaders, business figures, and other public personalities, along with travelogue-style and documentary content. He remains one of the most widely discussed figures in American political media, and his career is frequently referenced in debates about the changing structure of the news and opinion business.
