Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

US Representative

Born: October 13, 1989, New York City, USA
Known for: US House (NY-14), Green New Deal, progressive politics

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, often referred to by her initials AOC, is an American politician serving as a member of the United States House of Representatives. A Democrat and a self-described democratic socialist, she became one of the most prominent progressive figures in American politics after a surprising primary victory, and she is known for her advocacy on climate policy, economic inequality and social issues, as well as for her extensive use of social media.

Early life

Ocasio-Cortez was born in the Bronx, New York City, in 1989, to a father from the Bronx and a mother from Puerto Rico. Her family later moved to Yorktown in Westchester County. She studied at Boston University, where she earned a degree in international relations and economics. Before entering politics, she worked in various roles, including as an organizer and in the restaurant industry, and was involved in grassroots political campaigns.

Career

In 2018, Ocasio-Cortez ran in the Democratic primary for New York's 14th congressional district, which covers parts of the Bronx and Queens. As a little-known challenger, she defeated a long-serving incumbent in a closely watched upset that drew national attention. She went on to win the general election and, at the age of 29, became one of the youngest women ever elected to the United States Congress.

In office, she became closely associated with progressive policy proposals, most notably the Green New Deal, a framework she helped introduce alongside Senator Ed Markey that links climate action with economic and social programs such as job guarantees and infrastructure investment. She has also advocated for expanded health care access, including support for a single-payer system, higher taxes on top earners and changes to immigration policy. As one of a group of young progressive lawmakers sometimes referred to as "the Squad," she became a prominent voice for the left wing of the Democratic Party and a frequent target of criticism from political opponents.

Recent work

Ocasio-Cortez has been reelected to her House seat in subsequent elections and has remained one of the most visible members of the Democratic Party's progressive wing. She is known for her communication style, including livestreams and direct engagement with constituents and the public online, and for her questioning during congressional hearings. She has served on House committees dealing with oversight and financial services matters and has continued to push for legislation on climate, labor and economic justice. Widely regarded as one of the most recognizable members of Congress, she has built a large national following and is frequently mentioned in discussions about the future direction of the Democratic Party, while remaining a frequent subject of national political debate.
