Taron Egerton
Actor
Taron Egerton is a Welsh-raised British actor known for his work across action films, biographical dramas, and television. He rose to prominence in the mid-2010s and has earned recognition for his range, including a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of musician Elton John.
Early life
Egerton was born in Birkenhead, England, and was raised largely in Wales, including in Anglesey and Aberystwyth. He developed an interest in performance from a young age and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, one of the United Kingdom's leading drama schools. His training there prepared him for a transition into professional acting in film and television.
Career
Egerton gained early television experience before achieving his breakthrough in the spy action-comedy Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014), in which he played the lead role of a young recruit. The film's success made him an internationally recognized actor, and he reprised the role in its sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle. He also drew praise for playing the British ski jumper Eddie Edwards in the sports biographical comedy-drama Eddie the Eagle.
A defining moment in his career came with Rocketman (2019), a musical biographical film about Elton John in which Egerton both acted and performed the songs himself. His performance earned widespread acclaim and a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. He has taken on a variety of roles in films such as Robin Hood and the animated Sing series, in which he voiced a character.
Recent work
Egerton continued to expand his career with the Apple TV+ limited series Black Bird (2022), a crime drama in which his performance was well received and earned award nominations. He has appeared in additional film projects and has worked on stage as well. Known for committing physically and vocally to his roles, he remains an active and sought-after actor, continuing to take on diverse projects across film and television.
Egerton has been praised for his range, moving between large-scale action entertainment, sports drama, animated voice work, and intimate character studies. His decision to perform Elton John's songs himself in Rocketman, rather than lip-syncing to existing recordings, was widely noted and contributed to the film's critical reception, and his work on that project highlighted his singing ability alongside his acting. He has spoken in interviews about the demands of physically transformative roles and about his approach to portraying real people. In addition to his screen work, he has performed on stage in London theater productions. Maintaining a steady output of film and television projects, he has established himself as one of the prominent British actors of his generation, valued for both leading and ensemble roles across a variety of genres.
