Early life

Colman was born Sarah Caroline Colman on January 30, 1974, in Norwich, England, and grew up in Norfolk. She was educated at private schools in the region and later attended the University of Cambridge, where she became involved with the Footlights amateur theatrical club. It was there that she began performing in comedy and met collaborators who would later feature in her early career. She subsequently trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School before pursuing acting professionally.

Career

Colman first became widely known through British television comedy, notably the sitcom Peep Show, in which she appeared across its long run. She built a reputation for versatility, moving between comic roles and more serious material. A significant turning point came with the crime drama Broadchurch, in which she played Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller; the performance earned her a British Academy Television Award. She also appeared in the film Tyrannosaur, which brought critical praise for her dramatic work.

Her profile rose further with the historical comedy-drama The Favourite, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, in which she played Queen Anne. The role won her the Academy Award for Best Actress, along with a BAFTA and a Golden Globe. Around the same period she took on the role of Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix series The Crown, succeeding Claire Foy for the show's third and fourth seasons, a performance that earned her an Emmy Award.

Recent work

She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for The Lost Daughter, directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, and appeared in the acclaimed comedy series Fleabag, for which she received an Emmy nomination. She has lent her voice to animated projects and narrated documentary work, and remains active across stage, screen, and streaming productions. Known for her warmth in interviews and her reluctance to embrace celebrity trappings, Colman is widely regarded as one of the leading character actresses of her generation.
