Early life

Orlando Jonathan Blanchard Copeland Bloom was born on January 13, 1977, in Canterbury, Kent, England. He moved to London as a teenager to pursue acting, joining the National Youth Theatre and later studying at the British American Drama Academy. He went on to train at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. During his studies he suffered a serious fall that briefly threatened his mobility, an event he has frequently cited as formative.

Career

Bloom's breakthrough came almost immediately after drama school when he was cast as Legolas in Peter Jackson's adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The trilogy, released between 2001 and 2003, became a global phenomenon and established him as a leading figure in fantasy cinema. He quickly followed with the role of Will Turner in Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and its sequels, cementing his status as a star of blockbuster franchises.

During this period he appeared in a string of historical and adventure films, including Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven, in which he played the lead, as well as Troy and Elizabethtown. He returned to the world of Middle-earth as Legolas in The Hobbit film series, reprising one of his signature roles.

Recent work

In addition to film, Bloom has expanded into television and theatre. He starred in the Amazon Prime Video fantasy series Carnival Row, playing a detective in a richly imagined alternate world. On stage, he appeared in a West End production of Romeo and Juliet and later in a London staging of Killer Joe. He has also taken on smaller independent film projects and continued to appear in genre features.

Bloom has been active in humanitarian work, serving as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and visiting affected regions to raise awareness of children's issues. His personal life, including his marriage to singer Katy Perry, has drawn considerable media attention over the years. He has spoken in interviews about his interest in Buddhism and personal wellbeing, and has lent his support to environmental and conservation causes alongside his charitable work. He has also narrated documentary projects and taken on voice and supporting roles in a range of features. He remains a recognizable figure from the blockbuster era of the 2000s and continues to work across film, television, and stage.
