Early life
Freeman was born on June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee, and spent parts of his childhood in Mississippi. He later moved toward acting in earnest, working in theatre and small roles, and pursued his craft through years of stage performance and television before achieving wider recognition.
Career
Freeman became known to many viewers through the educational children's television program "The Electric Company" in the 1970s. His film career gained momentum in the late 1980s with acclaimed performances that earned him awards attention, including roles in "Street Smart" and "Driving Miss Daisy," the latter as a chauffeur in a story of friendship across racial and social lines.
