Michelle Obama is an American attorney, author, and former First Lady of the United States. As the wife of the 44th president, Barack Obama, she served from 2009 to 2017 and used her platform to champion initiatives on health, education, and military families. Since leaving the White House she has become a best-selling author and influential public figure.

Early life

Michelle LaVaughn Robinson was born on January 17, 1964, in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up on the city's South Side. She excelled academically and attended Princeton University, where she studied sociology and African American studies, before earning a law degree from Harvard Law School. She began her legal career at the Chicago firm Sidley Austin, where she met Barack Obama, whom she married in 1992.

Career

After leaving private practice, Obama worked in public service and the nonprofit sector, holding positions in Chicago city government and later at the University of Chicago and the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she focused on community engagement. When her husband entered national politics, she balanced her professional roles with campaigning, and she became a prominent figure during his 2008 presidential campaign.

As First Lady from 2009 to 2017, Obama launched several signature initiatives. Let's Move! aimed to combat childhood obesity through better nutrition and increased physical activity, and contributed to changes in school meal standards and food labeling. Joining Forces, developed with Jill Biden, supported military families and veterans through employment and wellness efforts. She also championed education for adolescent girls around the world through the Let Girls Learn initiative and promoted higher education access for American students through Reach Higher. A frequent and popular public speaker, she became known as one of the most admired and influential presidential spouses in modern American history, and she planted a notable kitchen garden at the White House to promote healthy eating.

Recent work

After leaving the White House, Obama published her memoir Becoming in 2018, which became one of the best-selling books of its era internationally and was accompanied by a large arena tour and a Netflix documentary. She has continued writing, releasing The Light We Carry, and has hosted podcasts and produced content through a media partnership. Through the Obama Foundation she supports leadership and civic programs, and she has remained active in voter participation efforts. Widely admired across much of the public, Michelle Obama has maintained a prominent role in American cultural and civic life.
