Actress & rapper

Born: June 2, 1988, New York City, United States
Known for: Crazy Rich Asians, The Farewell, Shang-Chi, Ocean's 8, Nora from Queens

Awkwafina, the stage name of Nora Lum, is an American actress, comedian and rapper who rose from online comedy and music videos to leading roles in major films and television. She is known for her comedic timing and distinctive voice, as well as for dramatic work that broadened her range.

Early life

Nora Lum was born on June 2, 1988, in New York City and grew up in the Forest Hills neighborhood of Queens. She has spoken about being raised in part by her grandmother after the death of her mother when Lum was young. She attended a specialized public high school for music and art and later studied at the University at Albany, including time spent abroad. She began performing and recording comedic music while still in her early twenties.

Career

Awkwafina first gained attention through comedic rap videos posted online, which built a following and led to live performances and an album. Her transition to acting accelerated in 2018 with two prominent films: the ensemble heist comedy Ocean's 8 and the hit romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians, in which her supporting performance drew significant praise.

Her dramatic breakthrough came with The Farewell, a 2019 film in which she played a young Chinese American woman returning to China amid a family secret. The performance earned widespread acclaim, and she received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, becoming the first performer of Asian descent to win in that category. The recognition marked a turning point in how she was regarded as a dramatic actress.

Recent work

Awkwafina has since worked across major studio films and animation. She appeared in Marvel's Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, lent her voice to animated features including Raya and the Last Dragon, and took roles in a range of comedies and family films. On television, she co-created and starred in the semi-autobiographical comedy series Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, drawing on her own background and upbringing.

Alongside acting, she has continued occasional music and hosting work, and she has been recognized as one of a generation of Asian American performers whose visibility increased significantly in mainstream Hollywood during the late 2010s. She has at times addressed public discussion about her early comedic persona and her approach to voice and performance.

With a career that moves between broad comedy, voice acting and dramatic roles, Awkwafina has established herself as a versatile screen presence. She continues to take on film and television projects, balancing studio franchises with smaller, character-driven work, and remains an active figure in both comedy and dramatic cinema.
