Greta Celeste Gerwig is an American actress, screenwriter and director who rose from independent cinema to become one of the most prominent filmmakers of her generation. Early life

Gerwig was born on August 4, 1983, in Sacramento, California, the setting she would later draw on for some of her work. She studied at Barnard College in New York, where she became involved in performance and writing, laying the groundwork for her entry into independent filmmaking.

Career

Gerwig first gained attention as an actress and co-writer in the low-budget "mumblecore" movement of the late 2000s, collaborating on films that emphasized naturalistic dialogue and improvisation. She broke through more widely with Frances Ha (2012), which she co-wrote with and starred in for director Noah Baumbach, earning praise for its portrait of a young woman adrift in New York.
