Glenn Close

Glenn Close is an American actress widely regarded as one of the most acclaimed performers of her generation across film, theater and television. Known for her versatility and her command of complex, often morally ambiguous characters, she has received numerous awards and a record number of Academy Award nominations without a win.

Early life

Close was born on March 19, 1947, in Greenwich, Connecticut. She spent part of her childhood abroad and was involved for a time with a religious movement before pursuing higher education. She studied theater and anthropology at the College of William & Mary, where she began performing and developed the foundation for her stage career.

Career

Close established herself on the New York stage in the 1970s and 1980s, winning Tony Awards for her theater work. She made a celebrated film debut in The World According to Garp (1982) and quickly earned acclaim in The Big Chill (1983) and The Natural (1984). Her portrayal of Alex Forrest in the thriller Fatal Attraction (1987) became a cultural touchstone, and she followed it with the scheming Marquise de Merteuil in Dangerous Liaisons (1988). Across these and later roles she earned repeated Academy Award nominations in both lead and supporting categories.

Close also built a substantial television career, winning an Emmy and a Golden Globe for her lead role as ruthless attorney Patty Hewes in the legal drama Damages, a part that ran for several seasons and demonstrated her ability to anchor a long-form series. Her stage work continued throughout her screen career, including acclaimed performances in musical theater; she earned particular renown for originating and reprising the role of faded silent-film star Norma Desmond in stage productions of Sunset Boulevard, for which she won additional Tony recognition. Across stage and screen she became known for immersive preparation and for inhabiting characters whose ambition or obsession placed them outside conventional sympathy.

Close earned further Oscar nominations for Albert Nobbs (2011) and The Wife (2017), the latter winning her a Golden Globe for her restrained portrayal of a long-overlooked spouse.
