Lil Wayne is an American rapper widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in hip-hop. With a career beginning in childhood, he became a defining artist of the 2000s and 2010s, known for his inventive wordplay, prolific mixtape output and the success of his Tha Carter album series.

Early life

Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. was born on September 27, 1982, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and grew up in the city's Hollygrove neighborhood. He showed an early aptitude for rapping and was signed to Cash Money Records as a child. As a youth he became the youngest member of the label's roster and joined the group Hot Boys, alongside Juvenile, B.G. and Turk, which released successful albums in the late 1990s.

Career

Lil Wayne launched his solo career with Tha Block Is Hot (1999) and built a reputation through a steady stream of releases. His artistic and commercial peak arrived with Tha Carter II (2005) and especially Tha Carter III (2008), which sold strongly and produced the hit singles "Lollipop" and "A Milli." The album won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Album, and Wayne became one of the most acclaimed and imitated rappers of the era, praised for his dense metaphors and distinctive delivery.

As founder of the Young Money Entertainment label, he played a key role in launching the careers of Drake and Nicki Minaj, two of the biggest artists of the following decade, greatly expanding his influence across the industry. He continued the Tha Carter series with subsequent installments and released numerous mixtapes, including the influential Dedication and No Ceilings series, which helped popularize the mixtape as an art form, while also experimenting with rock on the album Rebirth. During this period he served a prison sentence on a weapons charge, an episode he documented in writing he published years later.

Recent work

Lil Wayne released Tha Carter V in 2018 after years of delays tied to a long-running legal and financial dispute with his longtime label Cash Money and its head, Birdman, and it debuted atop the Billboard 200. He has continued to record and tour, releasing further projects including Funeral (2020) and additional installments in his long-running series, while also performing at major events. He has been honored for his career contributions to hip-hop and is frequently cited as a key influence by younger artists, with many crediting his mixtape era as foundational to modern rap. He remains an active and respected figure in the genre and a central part of its history.
