Early life

Ledecky was born on 17 March 1997 in Washington, D.C. She began swimming as a young child in the Maryland area and quickly showed exceptional aptitude for the sport, particularly in endurance events. Her dedication to training and her steady improvement through age-group competition marked her as a major talent well before she reached the senior international stage.

Career

Ledecky burst onto the world scene at the 2012 London Olympics, where, as a teenager, she won gold in the 800-metre freestyle. She went on to become a dominant force in distance freestyle, claiming multiple gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics and continuing her success at the Tokyo and Paris Games. Across these competitions she accumulated one of the largest collections of Olympic medals of any female swimmer.

She has been equally commanding at the World Aquatics Championships, winning a long series of world titles in events ranging from the 400-metre to the 1500-metre freestyle. Her world records in the 800-metre and 1500-metre freestyle have stood as benchmarks in the sport, and she is noted for the consistency and margins by which she has won her signature races, often finishing well clear of her nearest rivals. During her career she also competed collegiately at Stanford University, where she added a substantial number of national championship titles and individual records to her résumé before continuing as a professional.

Her dominance in the longer freestyle events has been so sustained that she has frequently been described as one of the most dominant athletes in any sport during her era. She is also recognised for her endurance-based training regimen and her composed, methodical approach to racing.
