Ice Cube

Ice Cube, born O'Shea Jackson, is an American rapper, songwriter, actor, and filmmaker. He first rose to prominence as a member of the influential gangsta rap group N.W.A before launching a successful solo recording career and an extensive career in film as an actor, writer, and producer. He is also the founder of the BIG3, a professional three-on-three basketball league. Across more than three decades he has been one of the most recognisable figures to emerge from West Coast hip hop.

Early life

Ice Cube was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. He began writing rhymes as a teenager and became involved in the city's emerging rap scene in the 1980s, developing the sharp, socially pointed lyrical style that would define his early work. His early collaborations within the Los Angeles rap community led to his involvement with the group that would bring him to national attention.

Career

He came to wider attention as a member of N.W.A, contributing to the group's landmark album "Straight Outta Compton," which became a foundational record in West Coast hip hop and a flashpoint in debates over censorship and the depiction of urban life. After departing the group over business disputes, he launched a solo career with the album "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted," followed by acclaimed releases including "Death Certificate" and "The Predator," cementing his reputation as one of rap's most incisive lyricists. During the 1990s he also formed the group Westside Connection with fellow West Coast rappers, sustaining his recording career alongside his expanding work in film.
