Known for: Nirvana drummer, Foo Fighters founder and frontman, two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee

Dave Grohl is an American musician, singer and songwriter best known as the drummer of Nirvana and the founder and frontman of the Foo Fighters. He is one of the most prominent figures in modern rock and has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice.

Early life

David Eric Grohl was born on January 14, 1969, in Warren, Ohio, and grew up in Springfield, Virginia. He taught himself to play guitar and drums as a teenager and became immersed in the Washington, D.C. punk scene, playing in local bands including the hardcore group Scream, with which he toured extensively.

Career

Grohl joined Nirvana as drummer ahead of the recording of Nevermind, the album that propelled the band to global fame and helped define the grunge movement of the early 1990s. His powerful, distinctive drumming became central to the band's sound across its brief but enormously influential run, which ended with the death of frontman Kurt Cobain in 1994.

Following Nirvana, Grohl founded the Foo Fighters, initially recording the debut album largely by himself before assembling a full band. Over the following decades the Foo Fighters became one of the most successful rock acts in the world, releasing a long string of albums and stadium-filling singles and winning numerous Grammy Awards. Grohl also pursued side projects, including the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures and various collaborations.

Recent work

Grohl has remained active as a performer, documentarian and author, directing music projects and writing a best-selling memoir about his life in music. The Foo Fighters continued to tour and record, navigating the death of longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins, which Grohl and the band marked with tribute concerts. A frequent presence in rock culture, Grohl is widely respected as both a musician and an advocate for live music and emerging artists.

Style and legacy

Grohl is one of relatively few musicians to achieve major success in two distinct, era-defining bands, first as the drummer behind one of the most influential albums in rock history and later as the singer, guitarist and songwriter leading a long-running stadium act. His drumming is admired for its power and precision, while as a frontman he is known for an energetic, approachable stage presence and an evident enthusiasm for performing. He has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame both as a member of Nirvana and as a member of the Foo Fighters, a rare distinction. Beyond his own bands, Grohl has collaborated widely across genres, contributed to documentary and film projects exploring music history and culture, and become a prominent public advocate for the value of live performance and grassroots music venues. His warm public image and his role as an unofficial ambassador for rock have made him one of the genre's most recognizable contemporary figures.
