Chance the Rapper is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter from Chicago who became one of the most prominent independent artists of his generation. Known for releasing his music for free and declining to sign with a major label, he blends hip-hop with gospel and soul influences and is recognized for his community activism in his home city.

Early life

Born Chancelor Bennett on April 16, 1993, he grew up on the South Side of Chicago. He began making music in high school and recorded his first mixtape, 10 Day, during a period of suspension from school. The project, released in 2012, drew attention to his distinctive voice and earnest, optimistic style, helping him build an early following in Chicago's vibrant rap scene.

Career

Chance the Rapper achieved a major breakthrough with his 2013 mixtape Acid Rap, which was widely praised by critics and circulated freely online, expanding his audience well beyond Chicago. He became known for a hopeful, spiritually inflected approach to hip-hop and for collaborating with a range of artists. He was also a member of the collective Social Experiment.

In 2016 he released Coloring Book, a project that incorporated strong gospel elements and featured numerous guest appearances. Distributed initially as a free streaming release, it made history as one of the first streaming-only projects to be recognized at the Grammy Awards, where it won Best Rap Album, and Chance also won Best New Artist. His success without a traditional record deal made him a widely cited example of an artist thriving through independent and streaming-based distribution. Beyond music, he became known for philanthropic work in Chicago, including support for public schools and youth arts programs.

Recent work

Chance the Rapper released his debut studio album, The Big Day, in 2019, a project themed around marriage and family. In subsequent years he continued to release singles and collaborate with other artists while remaining active in civic and community initiatives in Chicago. He has spoken about taking time to develop new material and has continued performing and engaging with fans. He has also been involved in television and other media projects and has used his platform to highlight social issues affecting his city. His success in winning major industry awards without signing to a major label has been widely cited as a turning point in how artists approach distribution in the streaming era. His influence on the independent music model and his role in elevating Chicago's hip-hop scene remain central to his reputation as an artist, and he is frequently referenced as an example of how digital platforms reshaped the path to mainstream recognition.
