Comedian & host

Born: September 23, 1985, Davis, California, United States
Known for: Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, The Daily Show, 2017 White House Correspondents' Dinner

Hasan Minhaj is an American comedian, writer, and television host known for his work as a correspondent on The Daily Show and as the creator and host of the Netflix series Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj. His comedy frequently blends personal storytelling with commentary on politics, culture, and the experience of growing up as the child of immigrants.

Early life

Hasan Minhaj was born on September 23, 1985, in Davis, California, to parents who had emigrated from India. He has spoken extensively in his stand-up about his upbringing in a Muslim Indian-American household and about his relationship with his father. He attended the University of California, Davis, and began performing stand-up comedy, gradually building experience on the live circuit and in clubs before moving into television. His early material often drew on his family background, his cultural identity, and the tension between tradition and the experiences of a first-generation American, themes that would remain central to his work.

Career

Minhaj joined The Daily Show as a correspondent during Jon Stewart's tenure and continued under Trevor Noah, where he delivered field segments and studio commentary that raised his national profile. In 2017 he hosted the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner, a high-visibility role given that the sitting president did not attend, and his set drew considerable attention.

He developed his autobiographical one-man show Homecoming King, which was filmed as a Netflix special and won a Peabody Award. The show combined personal narrative with reflections on identity and belonging. Building on its success, Minhaj created Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj, a weekly Netflix comedy and current-affairs program in which he used data-driven monologues and graphics to examine subjects ranging from economics to global politics. The series ran for several volumes and received Emmy and Peabody recognition before its conclusion.

Recent work

After Patriot Act ended, Minhaj continued to work in stand-up and acting, releasing further comedy specials and appearing in film and television projects. He was widely discussed as a potential successor to host The Daily Show during the program's search for a permanent host. In 2023 his storytelling style became the subject of public debate after a magazine profile examined the factual basis of anecdotes in his stand-up, prompting a detailed response from the comedian about the line between narrative and reporting in his work. Minhaj has remained active touring with new material and pursuing screen projects, maintaining a profile that bridges comedy, commentary, and cultural conversation.
