David Tennant is a Scottish actor widely known for his work in British television, film and theatre, and particularly for portraying the Tenth Doctor in the long-running science-fiction series "Doctor Who." Admired for his range and energy, he has moved between popular genre roles, prestige dramas and classical stage work.

Early life

Tennant was born David John McDonald in Bathgate, Scotland, and grew up in the area as the son of a Church of Scotland minister. He was drawn to acting from a young age, reportedly inspired in part by watching "Doctor Who" as a child. He trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, adopting a stage name early in his career. He began working in Scottish theatre and gradually moved into television and stage productions across the United Kingdom.

Career

Tennant built a steady career in British television and theatre through the 1990s and early 2000s, including work with the Royal Shakespeare Company. His profile rose sharply when he took on the role of the Tenth Doctor in the revived "Doctor Who," a part he played across several series. His portrayal, marked by charm, wit and emotional intensity, made him one of the most popular actors to have taken the role and a fixture of British popular culture.

Beyond "Doctor Who," he earned acclaim for the crime drama "Broadchurch," in which he played a detective investigating a child's death, a role that drew strong reviews across its run. He also appeared in a wide range of productions, including the "Harry Potter" film series, and took on the menacing antagonist Kilgrave in the Marvel series "Jessica Jones," demonstrating his versatility in darker material. His stage work has included celebrated Shakespearean roles such as Hamlet.

Recent work

Tennant has continued to be highly active across television and streaming, co-starring with Michael Sheen in the fantasy comedy "Good Omens," adapted from the novel by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, and reuniting with Sheen for other projects. He briefly returned to "Doctor Who" in special episodes, reprising a version of the Doctor for the show's anniversary. He has appeared in a range of television dramas and miniseries, taken on stage productions, and lent his distinctive voice to numerous animated projects, audiobooks and audio dramas. He has also hosted a podcast featuring conversations with fellow performers and regularly presented and appeared at awards ceremonies. Married to actress Georgia Tennant, he has balanced a busy screen career with stage and voice work, and he remains one of Britain's most recognizable and sought-after actors, frequently cited among the most popular performers in British television.
