Conan O'Brien

Comedian & TV host

Born: April 18, 1963, Brookline, Massachusetts, United States
Known for: Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Conan, The Tonight Show, Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend

Conan O'Brien is an American comedian, writer, and television host known for his absurdist humor, self-deprecating style, and decades-long presence in late-night television. He hosted some of the genre's best-known programs and later built a successful career in podcasting and streaming, remaining one of the most recognizable comedic personalities in American media.

Early life

Conan Christopher O'Brien was born on April 18, 1963, in Brookline, Massachusetts, into a large Irish Catholic family. A strong student, he attended Harvard University, where he studied history and literature and served as president of the humor magazine The Harvard Lampoon. His work there helped launch a career in comedy writing.

Career

O'Brien began as a writer, joining the staff of Saturday Night Live in the late 1980s and later writing for the animated series The Simpsons, where he contributed to several well-regarded episodes. In 1993, in a surprising choice, he was selected to succeed David Letterman as host of NBC's Late Night. Though he was relatively unknown as a performer at the time, he gradually won over audiences with his inventive sketches and offbeat sensibility, hosting Late Night with Conan O'Brien for sixteen years.

In 2009 he took over The Tonight Show, a long-held ambition, but his tenure was short-lived amid a high-profile network scheduling dispute, and he left the program in early 2010. He soon launched a new talk show, Conan, on the cable channel TBS, which ran for about a decade and embraced a looser, more travel- and remote-segment-oriented format in its later years.

Recent work

After ending the TBS show in 2021, O'Brien expanded his media company and focused on new formats. His podcast, Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend, became a major success, featuring loose, comedic conversations with celebrity guests and his longtime assistant and producer. He also created the travel series Conan O'Brien Must Go for streaming, building on the popular international segments from his earlier programs. In 2025 he hosted the Academy Awards ceremony, earning strong reviews for his performance. O'Brien also received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, a recognition of his long influence on comedy. Throughout his career he has been known for his willingness to mock himself, his tall, red-haired appearance, and the everyday awkwardness of celebrity, a style that has endeared him to a devoted fan base across television generations. His shift away from the traditional network late-night format toward podcasting, streaming, and live touring has also been seen as a model for how veteran hosts can adapt to a changing media landscape. He continues to perform, produce, and host across multiple platforms.
