Halle Bailey is an American singer and actress who first gained recognition as one half of the musical duo Chloe x Halle, formed with her older sister Chloe Bailey, before establishing a solo profile in both music and film. She is known for her work as a recording artist signed to Beyonce's Parkwood Entertainment and for playing the title role in Disney's live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.

Early life

Halle Lynn Bailey was born on March 27, 2000, in Atlanta, Georgia. She grew up in a family that encouraged performance, and she and her sister Chloe began singing and posting cover videos to YouTube as children. Their renditions of popular songs drew a substantial online following, and the sisters relocated with their family to the Los Angeles area to pursue entertainment careers. As young performers they appeared in small acting roles before their music attracted wider industry attention.

Career

The Bailey sisters' YouTube covers came to the attention of Beyonce, and in 2015 they signed with her label, Parkwood Entertainment. Performing as Chloe x Halle, they released the mixtape Sugar Symphony and later the studio albums The Kids Are Alright and Ungodly Hour. Their harmonized vocals and self-produced songwriting earned the duo several Grammy Award nominations, including nods for Best New Artist and in R&B categories. The pair also performed the national anthem at the Super Bowl and contributed music to film and television projects.

Alongside her music, Bailey built an acting career. She had a recurring role as Skyler Forster on the Freeform comedy series Grown-ish, a spin-off of Black-ish, which expanded her audience among younger viewers. Her profile rose dramatically when Disney cast her as Ariel in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. The casting generated significant public discussion, and the film, released in 2023, became a major box-office success, with critics praising her singing and screen presence.

Recent work

Following The Little Mermaid, Bailey continued to balance acting and music. She appeared in the 2023 film adaptation of the musical The Color Purple, portraying the young Nettie, in an ensemble cast that drew awards-season attention. She has also pursued solo music releases distinct from her work with her sister, signaling a transition toward an independent artistic identity while the sisters continue to collaborate selectively. Bailey has spoken publicly about motherhood and about navigating fame from a young age. With a foundation in both recorded music and high-profile film roles, she has positioned herself as a multi-disciplinary performer whose career spans the recording studio and the screen.
