Early life

Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born on April 15, 1990, in Paris, France, to English parents, and moved to England as a child. She grew up in Oxfordshire and took part in school theatre productions before auditioning for the role of Hermione Granger. She was cast without prior professional acting experience, and the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was released in 2001 when she was eleven.

Career

Watson appeared in all eight Harry Potter films, concluding with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 (2011). The role made her one of the highest-profile young actors in the world and was central to one of the most commercially successful film franchises in history. Determined to establish a career beyond the series, she took on contrasting parts in projects such as My Week with Marilyn (2011) and the coming-of-age drama The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012).

She continued to diversify her work with Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring (2013), Darren Aronofsky's biblical epic Noah (2014), and Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast (2017), in which she played Belle in a major box-office success. She also appeared as Meg March in Greta Gerwig's adaptation of Little Women (2019). Alongside acting, Watson studied at Brown University in the United States, earning a degree in English literature.

Recent work

In addition to her screen career, Watson has been notably active in gender-equality advocacy. As a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador she helped launch the HeForShe campaign in 2014, delivering a widely circulated speech encouraging men to support the movement. She has also engaged in sustainable fashion initiatives and other causes. In her acting work she has been selective in recent years, focusing on a smaller number of projects, and has continued to be associated with both her landmark franchise role and her advocacy. Her career remains defined by the transition from child star to an adult performer and public figure recognized for activism.
