Emma Roberts
Actress & producer
Emma Roberts is an American actress and producer known for her work across film and television, ranging from family-oriented projects early in her career to genre roles in horror and dark comedy. The daughter of actor Eric Roberts and the niece of actress Julia Roberts, she built an independent career that spans more than two decades, becoming a recurring presence in the anthology series American Horror Story and a fixture of teen and young-adult cinema in the 2000s and 2010s.
Early life
Emma Rose Roberts was born on February 10, 1991, in Rhinebeck, New York. She grew up around the film industry through her father, Eric Roberts, and her aunt, Julia Roberts, and showed an early interest in acting. She made her screen debut as a child in the crime drama Blow (2001), playing the young daughter of the character portrayed by Johnny Depp. The role introduced her to feature filmmaking and set the stage for a transition into lead roles aimed at younger audiences.
Career
Roberts gained wider recognition as the star of the Nickelodeon series Unfabulous (2004–2007), in which she played a middle-school student who expressed herself through songs. The series ran for three seasons and established her with a teenage audience. She moved into films designed for the same demographic, including Aquamarine (2006), Nancy Drew (2007), in which she played the title detective, and Hotel for Dogs (2009).
As she matured, Roberts took on more varied material. She appeared in the coming-of-age drama It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010), the horror sequel Scream 4 (2011), and the ensemble comedy We're the Millers (2013), one of her most commercially successful films. On television, she became closely associated with producer Ryan Murphy's projects, joining the cast of American Horror Story for multiple seasons beginning with Coven, and starring in the horror-comedy series Scream Queens (2015–2016).
Recent work
In later years Roberts continued to work steadily in both studio and streaming productions. She starred in Netflix romantic comedies including Holidate (2020), appeared in the thriller Abandoned, and took on producing duties through her involvement in developing projects. She also co-founded Belletrist, a literary platform and book club aimed at promoting reading and connecting authors with audiences. Roberts has balanced mainstream comedies, independent dramas, and horror titles, maintaining a presence in the genre work that has defined much of her adult career while broadening into production. Her body of work reflects a performer who moved from child and teen stardom into a sustained career as an adult actress.
