Dev Patel
Actor & director
Dev Patel is a British actor and filmmaker who rose to international prominence as a teenager and has since built a career marked by acclaimed performances in both popular and independent cinema, as well as a move into directing.
Early life
Patel was born in London, England, to a family of Gujarati Indian heritage, and grew up in the Harrow area. He developed an early interest in performing and martial arts, and he was cast while still a teenager in the British television series "Skins," where he played a leading role in the show's first episodes. This early work brought him to wider attention and led quickly to film opportunities.
Career
Patel's breakthrough came with Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire," in which he starred as a young man from the slums of Mumbai competing on a television quiz show. The film was a major critical and commercial success and won numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Picture, launching Patel onto the international stage. He went on to appear in films including the fantasy adventure "The Last Airbender," the science-fiction film "Chappie," and the ensemble comedy-drama "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" and its sequel, and he took a notable television role in the Aaron Sorkin series "The Newsroom." He also starred in the survival thriller "Hotel Mumbai," based on real events.
He earned widespread acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for the drama "Lion," in which he played a man searching for his birth family. He continued to take on varied and ambitious roles, including a celebrated lead performance in "The Personal History of David Copperfield" and a striking turn in the medieval fantasy "The Green Knight," further establishing his range and willingness to tackle distinctive projects.
Recent work
Patel expanded into directing with the action film "Monkey Man," which he also co-wrote and starred in, marking his feature directorial debut and drawing attention for its intense, personal action filmmaking. He has continued to pursue projects that blend mainstream appeal with creative risk-taking, choosing roles across independent dramas, genre films and international productions rather than confining himself to a single type of part. Of British Indian heritage, he has often discussed questions of identity and representation in the industry and has taken on roles that reflect both his British upbringing and his Indian background. Early in his career he was recognized as a rising talent, including a BAFTA award for emerging performers, and he has since accumulated a range of nominations and honors. Now regarded as one of the most respected British actors of his generation, Patel remains active across film as both a performer and an emerging filmmaker.
