Don Lemon
Journalist & news anchor
Don Lemon is an American journalist and television personality best known for his long tenure as a primetime anchor at CNN, where he became one of the network's most recognizable faces during more than fifteen years on air. He hosted the late-night program CNN Tonight and, in his final years at the network, co-anchored its morning show, building a reputation as an outspoken interviewer who frequently inserted his own commentary into coverage of politics, race and current events.
Early life
Lemon was born on March 1, 1966, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and grew up in the American South. He studied broadcast journalism, earning a degree from Brooklyn College after attending Louisiana State University. He began his career in local television, working at stations in markets including Birmingham, Alabama; St. Louis, Missouri; Philadelphia; and Chicago, where he reported and anchored the news. His early local work earned regional recognition and helped him move into national broadcasting.
Career
Before joining CNN, Lemon worked for NBC News, contributing to programs including Today and NBC Nightly News and serving as a correspondent for the network's owned stations. He joined CNN in 2006 and steadily rose to prominence, eventually anchoring evening and primetime programming. As host of CNN Tonight, he covered major national stories, moderated discussions on social issues, and conducted interviews with newsmakers and public figures. Lemon, who is openly gay, also became a visible commentator on questions of identity and discrimination, and he published a memoir reflecting on his life and career. His on-air style, which blended traditional anchoring with personal opinion, drew both a loyal audience and recurring controversy.
Over the years Lemon received industry recognition for his reporting, including work tied to breaking-news coverage of significant national events. He was part of CNN teams honored for coverage of major stories, and his prominence made him a frequent subject of media commentary in his own right.
Recent work
In 2023, CNN ended Lemon's contract, concluding his association with the network after more than a decade and a half. Following his departure, he launched an independent venture, The Don Lemon Show, distributing interviews and commentary through digital platforms and his own channels rather than a traditional cable outlet. The move reflected a broader trend of established broadcast journalists building direct-to-audience media operations outside legacy networks. In this format he has continued to interview public figures and comment on politics and culture, maintaining a public profile while operating independently of a major news organization.
