Singer & songwriter
Carrie Underwood is an American singer and songwriter who became one of the most successful country music artists of the 21st century after winning the televised singing competition "American Idol". Known for a powerful voice and a string of crossover hits, she has won multiple Grammy Awards and sold tens of millions of records.
Early life
Carrie Marie Underwood was born on March 10, 1983, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, and grew up in the small nearby town of Checotah. She sang in church and at local events from a young age and studied at Northeastern State University in Oklahoma. Her path to fame came when she auditioned for the fourth season of "American Idol", the popular Fox singing competition.
Career
Underwood won the fourth season of "American Idol" in 2005, a victory that launched her recording career. Her debut album, "Some Hearts" (2005), became a major commercial success and produced several hit singles, including "Jesus, Take the Wheel" and "Before He Cheats", the latter of which became one of her signature songs and a long-running radio staple. The album established her as a leading figure in mainstream country music.
She followed with a series of best-selling albums, including "Carnival Ride" (2007), "Play On" (2009), "Blown Away" (2012) and "Storyteller" (2015), each of which produced multiple charting singles. Over her career she has accumulated numerous number-one country hits and has been recognized with many industry honours, including multiple Grammy Awards and a long list of Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association awards. She also became a member of the Grand Ole Opry, a notable distinction in country music.
Recent work
Underwood has continued to release new music and to perform extensively, including a Las Vegas residency. She broadened her catalogue with projects outside her core country sound, including a Christmas album and a gospel album of hymns. For years she was closely associated with American football broadcasts, performing the opening theme for a major prime-time NFL telecast.
In 2025 Underwood joined the judging panel of "American Idol", returning to the program that had launched her career two decades earlier and taking a seat among the judges who evaluate a new generation of aspiring singers. Beyond music, she has pursued business ventures including a fitness apparel line and a wellness brand, and she has authored a book related to her fitness and lifestyle interests.
Regarded as one of the defining country artists of her generation, she remains a prominent live performer and recording artist with a wide mainstream following. Her sustained commercial success, her crossover appeal beyond traditional country audiences, and her long list of industry awards have made her one of the most recognizable figures to emerge from a televised talent competition, and she continues to record, tour and appear on television.
