Burna Boy

Burna Boy, born Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter who has become one of the most internationally prominent figures in contemporary African popular music. Working in a style he calls Afro-fusion, he blends Afrobeats, dancehall, reggae, hip hop and traditional Nigerian influences, and he has played a central role in carrying West African music to global audiences.

Early life

Ogulu was born on July 2, 1991, in Port Harcourt, in Nigeria's Rivers State. He grew up in a household with strong musical ties; his grandfather, Benson Idonije, had managed the celebrated Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti, whose music and political outlook became an enduring influence on Burna Boy's own work. He developed an early interest in music production and performance, and he spent time studying abroad in the United Kingdom before returning to Nigeria to pursue a recording career.

Career

Burna Boy first drew wide attention in Nigeria with the 2012 single "Like to Party" and his debut studio album, "L.I.F.E", released in 2013. Over the following years he built a reputation across Africa with further albums and singles, refining the genre-spanning sound that would define his career. His international profile grew sharply later in the decade, helped by the 2018 single "Ye", which became one of his signature songs.

His 2019 album "African Giant" marked a major commercial and critical breakthrough, earning a nomination for Best World Music Album at the Grammy Awards and establishing him as a leading voice in the global rise of Afrobeats. The follow-up, "Twice as Tall" (2020), produced in part with Diddy and others, won the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Album, making Burna Boy one of the most decorated African artists in the ceremony's history. The record featured collaborations with international artists and continued his exploration of pan-African themes.

Recent work

Burna Boy has continued to release commercially successful music and to expand his concert reach. His 2022 album "Love, Damini", named for his given name, included the widely played single "Last Last" and coincided with a period of landmark live performances. He became one of the first Nigerian artists to headline and sell out major Western venues, including large arenas and stadiums in the United Kingdom and the United States, a milestone often cited as evidence of Afrobeats' arrival in the global mainstream.

In 2023 he released "I Told Them...", which featured guest appearances from a range of international artists and reflected his growing engagement with hip hop. Across his catalogue he has earned numerous nominations at the Grammy Awards, the BET Awards and the MOBO Awards, among others, and he has performed at high-profile events worldwide.

Beyond his recordings, Burna Boy is known for an outspoken public persona and for music that frequently addresses social and political themes, echoing the activist tradition associated with Fela Kuti. He has been widely credited, alongside a generation of Nigerian peers, with broadening the international audience for African music and with helping to make Afrobeats a fixture of global pop culture.
