Norris Welcomes Verstappen to McLaren Talk: 'It's a Cool Thing'

Lando Norris isn't sweating the Max Verstappen-to-McLaren rumors — he's embracing them, even as Oscar Piastri holds his ground.

The Verstappen-to-McLaren storyline is heating up at Silverstone, and Lando Norris isn't running from it. Asked directly about the swirling speculation ahead of the British Grand Prix, the reigning world champion gave a relaxed, confident answer that said plenty between the lines.
Norris Plays It Cool — But Means It
Norris wasn't rattled when reporters brought up the possibility of Max Verstappen joining McLaren. If anything, he welcomed it. According to Sky Sports, the British driver said plenty of drivers want a seat at McLaren right now, pushing back on the idea that Verstappen is the only one knocking.
"It's a good thing that a four-time world champion potentially wants to join the team," Norris said at Thursday's press conference. He added that he's always been open to competing alongside the sport's elite — naming Verstappen alongside Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso as drivers he'd relish going head-to-head with inside the same garage.
That's not bravado. That's a champion who believes in his own ability.
What the Contract Clause Actually Means
Verstappen is locked in at Red Bull through the end of 2028, but there's reportedly an exit clause buried in that deal. The trigger: if he sits outside the top two in the Drivers' Championship when the summer break arrives, he's free to pursue a 2027 seat elsewhere.
Right now, that clause looks very much in play. Verstappen sits seventh in the standings, a massive 98 points behind championship leader Kimi Antonelli and 58 adrift of George Russell in second. The Red Bull simply hasn't been the dominant machine it once was — a slide that's been well documented, including criticism from Verstappen himself over team strategy earlier this season.
His best result of 2025 so far was a second-place finish in Austria last weekend — a result that offered some encouragement heading into Silverstone, but one that also underlines how far the team has slipped from its peak.
Verstappen Deflects, Doesn't Deny
Asked about his representatives reportedly meeting with McLaren, Verstappen kept things light without offering a firm denial. "That's what you say," he told a Sky Sports F1 reporter, laughing. He doubled down on his racing focus, pointing to last week's podium as momentum he wants to carry into the British GP weekend.
That kind of non-answer tends to speak volumes in Formula 1. Red Bull has also faced its own turbulence with Verstappen this season, which only adds fuel to the speculation fire.
Piastri Isn't Blinking
The driver whose seat would theoretically be on the line — Oscar Piastri — isn't losing sleep over any of this. The Australian said the speculation barely registers, pointing to his contract and multiple reassurances from McLaren leadership that he's not going anywhere.
McLaren boss Zak Brown backed that up publicly this week, insisting neither Norris nor Piastri is under threat. The team appears to be sending a clear message: we're flattered by the interest, but we're not blowing up a winning partnership on a rumor.
The Bottom Line
This is a story with real structural logic behind it. Verstappen has a clause, a team that's struggling, and a rival outfit that's currently the class of the field. Norris has the confidence to invite the competition rather than fear it — which is exactly the mindset of someone who believes he can beat anyone.
Whether anything materializes remains to be seen. But at Silverstone this weekend, the off-track drama is matching the on-track stakes. And everyone in the paddock knows it.
