Verstappen Critiques Red Bull Strategy After Austrian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen felt Red Bull's strategy cost him a win at the Austrian GP, finishing 1.6 seconds behind George Russell.

Max Verstappen came tantalizingly close to securing a victory at the Austrian Grand Prix, but a strategic misstep from Red Bull turned what could have been their first win of the 2026 Formula 1 season into a second-place finish.
A Missed Chance
Verstappen's race began with a fierce battle against Lewis Hamilton but soon evolved into a showdown with George Russell. As the race approached its final phases, Verstappen found himself just one second behind Russell, primed for an attack.
However, things took a turn when Mercedes called Russell in for a pit stop with 28 laps still on the board. This forced Red Bull to keep Verstappen out longer before he finally pitted with 22 laps remaining, putting him at a disadvantage with an 11-second gap to make up after rejoining.
Ultimately, Verstappen finished just 1.6 seconds shy of Russell, igniting a discussion about whether Red Bull should have opted for an earlier pit stop to undercut his rival, something that could have sealed the win.
Reflecting on Strategy
Post-race, Verstappen reflected on the decision-making, admitting it’s easier to critique strategy in hindsight. "My degradation was a bit better than George's, so I'm pretty confident I could have kept him behind," he told Sky Sports F1.
Despite the finish, Verstappen acknowledged that competing for the win was a significant step forward after a challenging start to the season where he only had one podium, a third-place finish in Canada.
Upgrades Making an Impact
Red Bull's latest upgrade package showed promise, immediately improving their car's performance. Team Principal Laurent Mekies expressed satisfaction with the enhancements, noting, "For the first time this season, we had the pace to be very close to winning."
The upgrades appear critical as Verstappen noted the team had struggled with the car's balance and grip throughout the previous races. He mentioned, "This has definitely been really good for us... I hope next week [at Silverstone] it's similar but it's a very different track layout."
With the performance now closer to their competitors, the focus shifts to the upcoming races as Red Bull seeks to maintain momentum.
Looking Ahead to Silverstone
The next challenge for Verstappen is the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, a track known for its unique layout and demanding corners. The team will need to replicate their recent performance to stay competitive in what could be a pivotal race for the season.
Sky Sports F1 analyst Karun Chandhok noted potential turning points in Verstappen's weekend, including missed opportunities from qualifying that could have placed him in a better position at the start. He suggested that had Verstappen avoided his qualifying crash, he might have started further up the grid and challenged for the victory more effectively.
As the 2026 Formula 1 season heats up, Red Bull will need to capitalize on their recent strides to close the gap with top competitors like Mercedes. The upcoming races will test their upgraded solutions and strategic capabilities, signaling a critical phase in the championship battle.
For now, all eyes are on Silverstone, where strategy and pace will be put to the ultimate test once again.
