Bezos Consortium Secures First Refusal on Liverpool Majority Stake

1892 Holdings acquired 38% of Liverpool FC for over £2bn, and holds an option to become majority shareholder within 12 months if FSG chooses to sell.

The investment group that brought Jeff Bezos into Liverpool Football Club holds a formal option to acquire a controlling stake in the club within the next year, should current majority owner Fenway Sports Group elect to reduce or exit its shareholding. The arrangement adds significant weight to a deal that was initially reported as a smaller transaction.
A Larger Stake Than First Reported
When the deal between FSG and 1892 Holdings was announced, early figures suggested the consortium had acquired somewhere between 30% and one-third of Liverpool. According to The Guardian Business, the actual figure is 38%, with 1892 Holdings paying just over £2bn for that minority position. The transaction implies a total club valuation of approximately £5.5bn — a figure that underscores how dramatically the asset has appreciated since FSG purchased Liverpool for £300m in 2010.
The consortium is led by entrepreneur Amit Bhatia and includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who entered the deal as a passive investor through the K5 Sports fund, of which he is the lead backer. Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin is also part of the group, bringing the combined personal wealth represented by the consortium's principals into the tens of billions of dollars.
The First-Refusal Clause
Central to the updated picture is a contractual provision giving 1892 Holdings the right of first refusal over any majority sale FSG might initiate within the next 12 months. FSG has been explicit that it is not under any obligation to sell and that the deal with 1892 does not constitute or signal an exit strategy. Operational control of the club remains firmly with FSG for now.
Nonetheless, the existence of such a clause means that Bezos, Bhatia, and Saverin could realistically replace FSG as Liverpool's controlling shareholders in the relatively near term, if FSG's position shifts. It is an option held by 1892, not a commitment demanded of FSG — a distinction the American ownership group has been careful to draw.
Who Sits Behind 1892 Holdings
The financial architecture behind the consortium is considerable. Bhatia has secured backing from the Mittal Family Trust; his father-in-law, Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, is among the wealthiest industrialists in the world, with the Mittal family's net worth estimated at around $17bn. Saverin's personal fortune is placed at approximately $33bn. Bezos, for his part, consistently ranks among the richest individuals on the planet — his business activity spans well beyond Amazon, as evidenced by ventures such as his AI-focused Prometheus initiative, which recently raised $12bn.
On the governance side, Bryan Baum, co-founder and managing partner of K5 Global, will take a seat on an expanded Liverpool board. Bhatia is set to serve as vice-chair, joined by Elaine Saverin, wife of Eduardo Saverin.
Implications for the Club's Future
For Liverpool supporters and observers of elite football finance, the deal raises pointed questions about the club's long-term ownership trajectory. FSG has overseen a period of sustained success at Anfield, delivering league titles and European trophies, and has stated plainly that it views 1892's involvement as additive investment rather than a transitional mechanism.
But the numbers and contractual terms tell a more layered story. A £2bn minority buy-in, combined with a 12-month window in which the same consortium can move to majority control, positions 1892 Holdings as far more than a passive financial partner. Whether FSG exercises restraint or decides conditions favour a sale, the structural groundwork for a change at the top has been quietly laid.
