Zhang Yiming

Zhang Yiming is a Chinese internet entrepreneur best known as the founder of ByteDance, the technology company behind widely used applications including the short-video platforms TikTok and its Chinese counterpart Douyin. He built ByteDance into one of the most valuable private technology companies in the world before stepping back from day-to-day leadership.

Education and Early Career

Zhang was born in 1983 in Longyan, a city in Fujian province in southeastern China. He studied at Nankai University in Tianjin, initially in microelectronics before moving into software engineering. After graduating he worked at several technology startups and established companies, gaining experience in areas such as search, real estate listings and online services.

These early roles exposed him to the rapidly growing Chinese internet sector and to the practical challenges of building and scaling digital products. Zhang founded ByteDance in 2012. The company subsequently launched Douyin, a short-video application, in the Chinese market, followed by TikTok for international audiences. ByteDance also expanded TikTok's global reach through the acquisition and integration of another short-video app. TikTok grew rapidly into one of the most downloaded applications worldwide, particularly popular among younger users, and helped establish short-form video as a major format in social media and online entertainment.

Under Zhang's leadership, ByteDance diversified into a range of products spanning entertainment, communication, education and enterprise tools, and grew into a large multinational organization with a workforce spread across many countries.

Stepping Back and Broader Context

In 2021 Zhang announced that he would step down as chief executive of ByteDance, indicating a desire to focus on long-term strategy and other interests rather than daily management.
