Born: December 17, 1978, Kibawe, Bukidnon, Philippines
Known for: Eight-division world champion, Philippine senator, professional boxing

Manny Pacquiao is a Filipino professional boxer and politician widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of his era. He is known for winning world titles across multiple weight divisions and for his subsequent career in Philippine politics, including service as a senator.

Early life

Pacquiao was born in 1978 in the southern Philippines and grew up in conditions of considerable poverty, with limited formal schooling. He left home at a young age and began boxing to help support himself and his family, turning professional as a teenager and fighting in lower weight classes early in his career. His early fights took place in the Philippines, where he built a record against regional opponents before he gained the attention of international promoters and trainers and began competing on a larger stage.

Career

Pacquiao rose to global prominence through a series of high-profile victories, becoming a world champion in an unprecedented number of weight classes and earning recognition as one of the sport's pound-for-pound best. He competed against many of the leading fighters of his generation in marquee bouts that drew enormous worldwide audiences and pay-per-view sales. Known for his speed, punching power and aggressive style, he became a national hero in the Philippines and one of boxing's biggest international draws.

His long career included celebrated victories as well as notable defeats, including a widely watched and commercially record-breaking bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr. He also recorded a memorable late-career victory over a much younger opponent to claim a world welterweight title, becoming one of the oldest fighters to win a major belt in that division. Throughout his time in the ring he was associated with his longtime trainer Freddie Roach, and his fights were major events in both the Philippines and the United States, frequently bringing the country to a standstill during broadcasts.

Recent work

Alongside his boxing career, Pacquiao entered politics, serving in the Philippine House of Representatives and later being elected to the Senate. He ran for the presidency of the Philippines in a national election, broadening his public role beyond sport. He has continued to be a prominent public figure, periodically returning to boxing for high-profile exhibitions and bouts while remaining active in civic and charitable causes. He has also devoted attention to charitable work in the Philippines, supporting causes related to poverty and community development in the regions where he grew up. Widely celebrated at home, he is remembered as a defining athlete of his generation, a global ambassador for boxing and a significant figure in Philippine public life.
