Ronda Rousey
Former MMA fighter & pro wrestler
Ronda Rousey is an American former mixed martial artist, judoka, and professional wrestler who became one of the most influential figures in the rise of women's mixed martial arts. An Olympic medalist in judo, she went on to become a pioneering champion in the Ultimate Fighting Championship before transitioning to professional wrestling and acting.
Early life
Rousey was born on February 1, 1987, in Riverside, California, and raised in part in North Dakota and Southern California. She took up judo as a child under the guidance of her mother, AnnMaria De Mars, who was herself a world judo champion and the first American to win a world title in the sport. Rousey overcame a childhood speech difficulty and devoted herself to judo as a teenager, competing internationally at a young age and building an accomplished amateur career that included junior world honors.
Career
Rousey won a bronze medal in judo at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, becoming the first American woman to earn an Olympic medal in the sport. She later transitioned to mixed martial arts, where she became known for finishing opponents extremely quickly, frequently by her signature armbar submission. She won a title in the Strikeforce promotion and then, after the UFC introduced a women's division, became the first UFC women's bantamweight champion. She defended the title several times, often in seconds or a single round, and her dominance and crossover popularity were widely credited with helping establish and popularize women's divisions in major MMA promotions, making her one of the sport's biggest stars.
Recent work
After a period of dominance, Rousey suffered notable defeats, including a high-profile knockout loss, and stepped away from MMA. She subsequently signed with WWE, debuting in 2018 and quickly becoming a featured performer, winning championships and competing in high-profile matches, including a main-event appearance at WrestleMania. She later reduced her in-ring activity to focus on family. Rousey has also pursued an acting and presenting career, appearing in films such as "The Expendables 3," "Furious 7," and "Mile 22," lending her voice to video games and animation, and authoring a best-selling memoir. Her crossover appeal made her one of the most marketable athletes of her era, and she has been the subject of extensive media coverage and endorsement deals. She has spoken publicly about the pressures of fame and competition, as well as her later focus on family life and ranching. She remains widely recognized as a trailblazer whose success helped expand opportunities and visibility for women in combat sports and beyond.
