Ricky Gervais
Comedian, actor & writer
Ricky Gervais is an English comedian, actor, writer, director, and producer best known for co-creating the mockumentary sitcom "The Office." He has won multiple awards, including BAFTA, Emmy, and Golden Globe honors, and is also recognized for his stand-up comedy, his work as a creator of original series, and his provocative awards-show hosting.
Early life
Gervais was born on June 25, 1961, in Reading, Berkshire, England, the youngest of four children in a working-class family. He attended local schools and went on to study at University College London, initially enrolling in biology before switching to philosophy. In the 1980s he pursued a music career as half of the new wave pop duo Seona Dancing, which released singles without achieving major success, and he later worked managing bands. He moved into radio and entertainment work in the 1990s, including a stint as an entertainment manager and presenter.
Career
Gervais developed his comic persona through radio at the London station XFM, working alongside Stephen Merchant, and through appearances on British television comedy shows. His major breakthrough came with "The Office," which he co-created and co-wrote with Merchant and in which he starred as the cringe-inducing office manager David Brent. First broadcast on the BBC in 2001, the series became internationally influential and spawned numerous adaptations around the world, including a long-running and highly successful American version. Gervais and Merchant followed it with "Extras," a comedy about a struggling actor that featured many celebrity guest appearances as exaggerated versions of themselves.
Gervais also built a successful stand-up career with major touring shows and filmed specials, and he created and voiced animated and audio projects, including a popular series of podcasts and audiobooks. He became widely known internationally for hosting the Golden Globe Awards on several occasions, where his pointed, often controversial monologues mocking celebrities and the industry drew substantial media attention.
Recent work
In later years Gervais created, wrote, and starred in "Derek," a comedy-drama set in a care home, and "After Life," a Netflix series about a grieving widower coping with the death of his wife that became one of his most acclaimed projects and ran for three seasons. He has continued to release stand-up specials on Netflix, including "Humanity," "SuperNature," and "Armageddon," which have been commercially successful while sometimes generating debate over their content and willingness to tackle taboo subjects. Gervais is also an outspoken advocate for animal welfare and atheism and has been associated with various related causes and charities.
