Rami Malek is an American actor who won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury in the 2018 film "Bohemian Rhapsody." Earlier, he gained critical acclaim and an Emmy Award for his lead role in the television series "Mr. Robot." Known for his intense, transformative performances, he has worked across television, independent film and major studio franchises.

Early life

Malek was born in Los Angeles, California, to a family of Egyptian descent. He grew up in the Los Angeles area with his twin brother and an older sister. He developed an interest in acting during his school years and went on to study theatre, earning a degree in fine arts from the University of Evansville in Indiana. After graduating he returned to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career, taking small roles while building experience.

Career

Malek's early screen work included a recurring role in the sitcom "The War at Home" and a part in the "Night at the Museum" film series as the pharaoh Ahkmenrah. He appeared in films such as "The Pacific" miniseries and "Short Term 12," gradually earning recognition for his character work. His breakthrough came with the USA Network drama "Mr. Robot," in which he played the troubled hacker Elliot Alderson, a performance that won him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

His portrayal of Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody" brought him international acclaim and a sweep of major awards, including the Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild Award for best actor. The role marked his transition to leading film status. He subsequently played the villain Safin in the James Bond film "No Time to Die" and appeared in Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer."
