Princess Charlotte

British royal

Born: May 2, 2015, London, England
Known for: Member of the British royal family; daughter of the Prince and Princess of Wales

Princess Charlotte of Wales is a member of the British royal family and the second child and only daughter of William, Prince of Wales, and Catherine, Princess of Wales. As a granddaughter of King Charles III, she occupies a senior position in the line of succession to the British throne and is one of the most photographed children in the world.

Early life

Charlotte was born in London in 2015 at St Mary's Hospital, the same hospital where her father and uncle were born. Her birth was widely covered by international media, and she was christened in a ceremony attended by members of the royal family. She has an older brother, Prince George, and a younger brother, Prince Louis. The siblings have largely been raised in Windsor and at the family's residences, with their parents seeking to give them as ordinary an upbringing as possible within the constraints of public life.

Public role

As a young child, Charlotte is not yet engaged in official royal duties, but she has appeared at a number of significant public and ceremonial occasions. She has been present at events such as Trooping the Colour, royal weddings, and national commemorations, and her appearances are closely followed by the press and public. Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II and the accession of her grandfather as King, Charlotte's title changed in line with her father becoming Prince of Wales, and she became known as Princess Charlotte of Wales. She attended the coronation of King Charles III, one of the major state occasions of her childhood.

Education and succession

Charlotte attends school in England alongside her brothers, and the family has emphasized a relatively private and stable home environment. She is positioned among the first several individuals in the line of succession to the throne, reflecting reforms to the rules of succession that ensure her place is not displaced by a younger brother. Her full name is Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, with the names widely seen as tributes to senior members of her family, including the late Queen Elizabeth II and her grandmother Diana, Princess of Wales. She attends Lambrook School in Berkshire alongside her brothers, near the family's home. Because of her age, public knowledge of Charlotte focuses largely on official photographs, released by her parents to mark birthdays and milestones, and on her appearances at family and state events. She is widely regarded as one of the most prominent children associated with the modern monarchy.
