Mike Tyson

Former heavyweight boxing champion

Born: June 30, 1966, Brooklyn, New York, United States
Known for: Youngest heavyweight champion, undisputed heavyweight title

Mike Tyson is an American former professional boxer who became the youngest world heavyweight champion in history. Known for his ferocious punching power and intimidating style, he dominated the heavyweight division in the late 1980s and remains one of the most famous and controversial figures in the history of the sport.

Early life

Michael Gerard Tyson was born on June 30, 1966, in Brooklyn, New York, and grew up in difficult circumstances in the city. As a troubled youth he was sent to a reform school, where his boxing ability was discovered. He came under the guidance of veteran trainer and manager Cus D'Amato, who became a father figure and shaped Tyson's early career. D'Amato's mentorship was central to developing Tyson's defensive, aggressive fighting style.

Career

Tyson turned professional in 1985 and rose rapidly through the heavyweight ranks with a series of knockouts. In 1986 he won the WBC heavyweight title by defeating Trevor Berbick, becoming the youngest heavyweight champion in history at age 20. He subsequently unified the major titles to become undisputed heavyweight champion, dominating opponents with speed and power.

His reign was interrupted by a stunning upset loss to Buster Douglas in Tokyo in 1990, one of the biggest upsets in boxing history. Tyson's career and personal life were later marked by significant turmoil, including a criminal conviction and imprisonment in the early 1990s. After his release he returned to the ring and regained a portion of the heavyweight title, though his comeback was punctuated by controversy, most infamously his disqualification in the 1997 rematch with Evander Holyfield after he bit his opponent's ear. He fought for the undisputed title against Lennox Lewis in 2002 and continued boxing into the mid-2000s before retiring with a professional record that included numerous knockouts.

Recent work

After his boxing career, Tyson reinvented himself as a public personality and entertainer. He appeared in films, including a memorable cameo in The Hangover, performed a one-man stage show about his life, and launched a popular podcast, Hot Boxin' with Mike Tyson. He has also built business ventures, including a cannabis company. In 2020 he returned to the ring for an exhibition bout, and in 2024 he took part in a heavily promoted exhibition match against Jake Paul. Now widely viewed as a cultural icon and entertainer as much as a former champion, Tyson remains a prominent and instantly recognizable figure in both sports and popular culture around the world.
