Mikaela Shiffrin
Alpine ski racer
Mikaela Shiffrin is an American World Cup alpine ski racer widely regarded as one of the greatest skiers in the history of the sport. Renowned especially for her technical precision in slalom, she holds the record for the most World Cup race victories and has won multiple Olympic and World Championship titles.
Early life
Mikaela Pauline Shiffrin was born on March 13, 1995, in Vail, Colorado. Both of her parents were skiers, and she was introduced to the sport at a very young age. Her family emphasized strong technical fundamentals in her training, and she developed her skills partly at Burke Mountain Academy in Vermont, a school known for producing competitive ski racers. Her early dedication to drilling technique became a hallmark of her later success.
Career
Shiffrin made her World Cup debut as a teenager and quickly rose to the top of the sport. She won her first World Championship gold in slalom in 2013 and, at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, became the youngest slalom gold medalist in Olympic history. She added a second Olympic gold in giant slalom at the 2018 Pyeongchang Games, along with a silver.
Over the following seasons Shiffrin dominated the World Cup circuit, winning multiple overall World Cup titles and numerous individual discipline titles, particularly in slalom, where she has been historically dominant. She expanded her range beyond slalom and giant slalom to compete successfully in speed events such as super-G and downhill as well. In the 2018-19 season she set a record for the most World Cup wins in a single season, with 17 victories. She went on to surpass the all-time records for most World Cup race victories, overtaking the previous marks held by Lindsey Vonn and Ingemar Stenmark to stand alone atop the sport's history.
Recent work
Shiffrin has continued to add to her record tally of World Cup wins, extending her standing as the most successful World Cup ski racer of all time and reaching milestone victory totals that had never previously been approached. She has also won additional World Championship medals across multiple disciplines. Her career has included periods of personal challenge, including the loss of her father in 2020 and recoveries from injury, experiences she has discussed openly with the public. Recognized for her consistency, longevity, and technical mastery across an unusually broad range of disciplines, Shiffrin remains a central figure in international alpine skiing and a leading ambassador for the sport.
