Karim Benzema
Footballer (striker)
Karim Benzema is a French professional footballer regarded as one of the finest strikers of his generation. He spent the bulk of his career at Real Madrid, where he became one of the club's all-time leading scorers and won the UEFA Champions League five times. In 2022 he was awarded the Ballon d'Or as the world's best player, capping a season in which he was instrumental to Real Madrid's domestic and European success.
Early life
Benzema was born on 19 December 1987 in Lyon, France, into a family of Algerian descent. He grew up in the Bron suburb of Lyon and joined the youth academy of Olympique Lyonnais as a child, progressing through the club's ranks. He developed a reputation as a technically gifted and intelligent forward, and made his senior debut for Lyon in the mid-2000s, going on to win multiple Ligue 1 titles with the club during a period of Lyon dominance in French football.
Career
In 2009 Benzema transferred to Real Madrid, where he would spend fourteen seasons. Initially used alongside and in support of high-profile teammates, he gradually became the focal point of the attack, prized for his link-up play, movement and finishing. With Real Madrid he won numerous La Liga titles and a record number of Champions League crowns, forming part of one of the most successful eras in the club's history. His individual peak came in the 2021-22 season, when a series of decisive performances in the Champions League knockout rounds helped Real Madrid to the title and earned him the 2022 Ballon d'Or.
At international level, Benzema represented France from the late 2000s. He was part of the squad at major tournaments including the 2014 FIFA World Cup. His international career was interrupted for several years following a legal case connected to a teammate, after which he returned to the national team in 2021 and featured at the European Championship.
Recent work
After leaving Real Madrid in 2023, Benzema signed for Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia's Pro League, joining a wave of established international stars moving to the Saudi competition. He has continued to play at a high level there while remaining one of the most recognisable figures in world football. Across his career he has been celebrated for his longevity, his cerebral style of play and his ability to perform in the biggest matches, and he is widely cited as one of the defining strikers of the 2010s and early 2020s.
