Former NFL quarterback

Born: January 3, 1981, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
Known for: Two-time Super Bowl champion and MVP with the New York Giants

Eli Manning is an American former professional football player who spent his entire National Football League (NFL) career as a quarterback for the New York Giants. He is best known for leading the Giants to two Super Bowl championships, earning Most Valuable Player honors in both title games, and for his durability and longevity as a franchise quarterback.

Early life

Manning was born on January 3, 1981, in New Orleans, Louisiana, into a prominent football family. His father, Archie Manning, was a longtime NFL quarterback, and his older brother Peyton Manning became one of the most accomplished quarterbacks in league history. Eli attended Isidore Newman School in New Orleans before playing college football at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), where he excelled and earned numerous awards as one of the top collegiate quarterbacks.

Career

Manning entered the NFL as the top overall selection in the 2004 NFL Draft, with his rights traded to the New York Giants on draft day. He took over as the team's starting quarterback and remained the face of the franchise for many years, becoming known for his consistency and his ability to perform in high-pressure situations.

His career highlights center on two Super Bowl runs. In the first, the Giants upset an undefeated New England Patriots team, with Manning engineering a late, game-winning drive that included a celebrated improvised completion. Years later he led the Giants to another championship over the Patriots, again earning Super Bowl MVP honors. Across his career he set numerous franchise passing records and was selected to multiple Pro Bowls, while also earning a reputation for reliability, starting an exceptionally long streak of consecutive games.

Later career and legacy

Manning played his entire career with the Giants before retiring, and the team subsequently retired his jersey number and inducted him into its Ring of Honor. In retirement he has remained connected to the sport through media and broadcasting, most notably a popular alternative game broadcast he co-hosts with his brother Peyton, in which the two offer relaxed, conversational commentary on live games. He has also remained active in charitable work and business ventures, building on the philanthropic efforts he supported during his playing days. Throughout his career he was known for an even-tempered, understated personality off the field that contrasted with his ability to rise to the occasion in the sport's biggest moments. Widely respected for his sportsmanship, reliability and steadiness, Eli Manning is remembered as one of the most successful quarterbacks in Giants history, a two-time champion who delivered in the clutch, and a central figure in one of football's most prominent families.
