Born: July 31, 1965, Yate, England
Known for: Harry Potter series, The Casual Vacancy, Cormoran Strike novels (as Robert Galbraith)

J.K. Rowling is a British author best known for the Harry Potter series, a sequence of seven fantasy novels that became one of the best-selling book franchises in history. The books were adapted into a major film series and spawned a wide range of related media, establishing Rowling as one of the most commercially successful authors of her generation.

Early life

Born Joanne Rowling on July 31, 1965, in Yate, Gloucestershire, England, she grew up in the West Country and was an avid reader and writer from childhood. She studied French and Classics at the University of Exeter. The idea for Harry Potter reportedly came to her in 1990 during a delayed train journey, after which she spent several years developing the story while working various jobs and, for a period, raising her daughter as a single parent in Edinburgh.

Career

The first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was published in 1997 by Bloomsbury, with the title adapted to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for the American market. The series followed the schooling of a young wizard and his friends across seven books, concluding with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 2007. The novels were translated into dozens of languages and adapted into eight feature films produced by Warner Bros.

The success of the franchise made Rowling one of the wealthiest and most recognised authors in the world. She expanded the fictional universe with companion works such as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and The Tales of Beedle the Bard, and later contributed to the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and the Fantastic Beasts film series.

Recent work

After the Harry Potter series, Rowling turned to fiction for adult readers, publishing the standalone novel The Casual Vacancy in 2012, which was later adapted as a television miniseries. She also adopted the pen name Robert Galbraith to write the Cormoran Strike crime series, beginning with The Cuckoo's Calling in 2013; the novels follow a private investigator and his assistant, and they have been adapted for television. The series has continued with several further installments, and the Galbraith name became a notable example of an established author writing successfully under a pseudonym before her identity was revealed.

Rowling has remained a prominent and at times controversial public figure, drawing significant attention for her commentary on social and political issues, particularly in the later part of her career. She has also been recognised for extensive philanthropy, including work related to children's welfare, single-parent families and multiple sclerosis research, a cause connected to her mother's illness. She founded the charitable trust Volant and the international children's charity Lumos, which campaigns to end the institutionalisation of children. Over her career she has received numerous honours for her contributions to literature and her charitable work, and the cultural footprint of the Harry Potter franchise has extended into theme parks, stage productions and a continuing fan community.
